Not too long ago, what happened at Mavericks, stayed at Mavericks. The hyper-surveillance of the past decade has extended far past our Tik Tok riddled iPhones and has creeped into the lineups of even the most localized and hidden spots. Once a hidden gem of Santa Cruz’s stingiest and scariest locals, Mavericks has since turned it’s green, gnarled face towards the spotlight, bringing some of the world’s heaviest waves to a screen near you.

I, for one, could not be happier about the spot’s increased popularity. The primary reason for this is that I have never, and probably will never, make that long paddle out to deal with that wave hungry lineup of madmen. If (and I say “if” in the most liberal way) I were to try and surf Mavericks, my only motivation to actual paddle into a wave would come from the plethora of photographers straddling their jet skis in oversized parkas in hopes of getting a pick for my Instagram before plummeting to my death.

Anyways, in an extension of one of the craziest winters I can remember, Mavericks went KooKoo KahKah Bananas yesterday and I’m honestly curious if a single wave went undocumented. We saw cringeworthy wipeouts, near two wave hold downs, trips through the rocks, massive backside barrels, one of the biggest tow waves ever ridden, and even some maniac on a pair of water skis. Here’s a look at some of the most striking moments from yesterday’s super session:

Solidifying himself as a contender for the GOAT, Peter Mel tows into one of the biggest waves anyone can remember. Peter has been on an absolute tear this winter, boasting a viral ride at his home break on a seemingly daily basis. A true legend.

Manny Resano surfs this 20 footer like it’s barely head high. Goofy footers had a field day in the slabby, hollowed out inner bowl at Mavericks.

Mavericks does its best Tahoe impression. Chuck Patterson faces his shoulders downhill and puts both rails on edge. I’m not sure anyone was expecting to see this on such a historic day.

Grant “Twiggy” Baker just a few moments before getting snapped. Baker’s wipeout manifested itself into a near two-wave hold down. He was eventually rescued a few yards from the rocks. Listen to him recount the wipeout (and session) here.
